A Witch Journal
Why starting a journal around your practice might be the most important thing you do.
One of the most personal tools in the Witch’s arsenal is her Grimoire. A Grimoire is different than a magical journal where you might record your thoughts, ideas, rough sketches of spells, and notes. A Grimoire is a scared tome meant to be your reference for all things magical in your personal practice.
Traditionally, a Grimoire is often an open-ended journey - one that is passed down through the generations and added to as new witches in your line add their own discoveries.
While nearly every witch I have encountered desires to start a Grimoire - so many are unsure of where to begin. One important note you must keep in mind - your Grimoire is an organic, living, evolving entity - it will change with you. As such, do not over think the design or content. You can always go back and rework, add and move things around.
Personally, I keep a magical journal that I record ideas and spells that I am working on. When I have them finalized, I then dedicate a page or spread to my Grimoire and transfer the information over. I have a hand-stitched book with aged parchment papers that are naturally divided into sections. I use the first section as a reference tool for planets, runes, astrology, etc. and for magical correspondences (i.e. what herbs, colors, etc. deepen my ritual work). The back section is for recording successful spells and rituals.
I know witches who have created cut and paste collage pages; others who hand-draw every element and those who print pre-designed pages from the internet. ALL choices are acceptable because it’s YOUR book.
Below you find a list of ideas of what you can include in your own Grimoire as well as links to a few journals I love, and some of those aforementioned pre-designed pages.
